Chocolate helps with weight loss

Who would have thought?: Chocolate works as a diet booster! But only dark chocolate with a cocoa content of at least 70 percent.

Scientists discovered a few years ago that dark chocolate has a positive effect on health. So showed a study from the University of Hull in England, in which the cholesterol levels of diabetics who ate 45 grams of dark chocolate daily dropped and the risk of heart attack was reduced. At the same time, dark chocolate has been shown to lower blood sugar levels. These effects are attributed to the secondary plant substances of cocoa, the so-called flavonols. And now dark chocolate is also said to help you lose weight.

That at least is the surprising result of a study by the Institute of Diet and Health in Mainz, Germany. The study participants were divided into two groups and both ate the same low-carbohydrate diet. The participants of one group ate an additional 40 grams (1/3 cup) of dark chocolate daily. The result: Although the participants of the chocolate group consumed daily about 200 calories more (so many calories contain 40 grams of dark chocolate), they lost weight significantly faster and in addition were able to improve their blood values, like cholesterol. The Mainz scientists suspect that chocolate with a high cocoa content can be used as an accelerator in any diet. However, the reasons for this still have to be researched.

Conclusion:
Although this news could cause cheering among chocolate lovers, these results should be considered soberly. On the one hand, what has been said does not apply to any chocolate, but only to that chocolate with a high cocoa content of at least 70 percent. On the other hand, chocolate has a relatively high calorie content and the limit at which the possible advantage turns into a disadvantage is quickly reached. However, if you ever feel like something sweet while losing weight, you no longer have to scold yourself. Now and then a piece of dark chocolate can even support weight loss.
